St. Thomas preschool was originated in January of 1971.  Catherine Guers Leuer, a student at the College of St. Catherine, asked pastor Fr. Gordon Mycue if she might complete a project for her education course by planning and holding a three week program using the church facilities and asking children from the community to take part in the school.  Father wholeheartedly agreed and assisted in getting many volunteers to help run the program.  Filling the enrollment was no problem as this was an unique experience in the area at the time.

The response was so positive that it was decided to establish a full time preschool program.  The school was held for its first years in the two classrooms in the rectory basement.  Fr. Mycue became the certified director and the staff was both paid and volunteer.  Volunteers also built a playground for the school and the church basement was used for bad weather days.  Later, the school was set up as an independent venture with a fully qualified director and staff.

When the Parish Center was planned, two rooms were reserved to be used as a preschool.  A new playground was constructed and later a cement surface was added for riding toys.

St Thomas Preschool continues to offer an opportunity for the young of the area to prepare for their formal education.  It is also a service that the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle offers to the people of the community.
